Yoga Breathing (Pranayama) Standards



WWYA includes a Yoga school in the RSY (Registered School of Yoga) Registry only when its YTT (Yoga Teacher Training program):

  • Has a definite, pre-defined curriculum that meets the Worldwide Yoga Alliance Standards
  • Is taught by qualified Principal Yoga Teacher Trainers who are qualified to train teachers
  • Offers a consistent approach reflective of the depth, rather than a survey, of different approaches

Faculty Qualifications

The Yoga School must possess an active RSY-B designation in the WWYA School Registry at the time of the delivery of the course.

The Principal Trainer must be an actively registered E-RTY 200 or E-RTY 500 with Worldwide Yoga Alliance at the time of the delivery of the course, with a minimum of 500 hours of teaching experience after becoming an E-RTY. Also, the Principal Trainer must have an RTY-B designation, with a minimum of 500 hours and two years of teaching experience in that subject area, as demonstrated by either documentation or an attestation.

Yoga Breathing (Pranayama) Standards

Topics for RSY-B’s Teacher Training program must correspond to the following WWYA’s Educational Categories:

General Background in the Specialty Area: 8 Hours

Minimum Contact Hours: 8 hours
Minimum Contact Hours with Principal Trainer(s): 0 hours

This category includes:

  • The study and understanding of the Yoga Teacher’s relationship with health care and other professionals,
  • Knowing when to suggest that the student consult a health care professional regarding any health issues,
  • Understanding of psychological considerations and how to assess risk.
  • Also includes the knowledge of the basic communication skills.

Techniques, Training and Practice: 25 Hours

Minimum Contact Hours: 25 hours
Minimum Contact Hours with Principal Trainer(s): 18 hours

This category includes appropriate yoga-based practices, such as asanas, asana-based movement, breathing techniques (Pranayama) and chanting.

Teaching Methodology: 12 Hours

Minimum Contact Hours: 12 hours
Minimum Contact Hours with Principal Trainer(s): 10 hours

This includes design of class plans for the beginner to advanced students.

Anatomy and Physiology: 10 Hours

Minimum Contact Hours: 10 hours
Minimum Contact Hours with Principal Trainer(s): 0 hours

It includes both, Human Physical Anatomy and Physiology (bodily systems, organs, etc.) and Energy Anatomy and Physiology (chakras, nadis, etc.). Human anatomy and physiology (both physical and subtle body) related specifically to considerations during Pranayama. Topics include but are not limited to: overview of what is normal Anatomy and Physiology, how relevant organs function, overview of the body mechanics etc. It also includes both the study of the subject and application of its principles to yoga practice (benefits, contraindications, healthy movement patterns, etc).

Yoga Philosophy, Lifestyle and Ethics for Yoga Teachers: 12 Hours

Minimum Contact Hours: 12 hours
Minimum Contact Hours with Principal Trainer(s): 0 hours

This category includes traditional Yoga Philosophy as it applies to lifestyle and well-being, basic yoga precepts as they relate to teaching of Yoga and Pranayama, awareness and training of ethical behavior, touching and state and local legal requirements, and basics of ethical language and behavior.

Practicum: 20 Hours

Minimum Contact Hours: 20 hour
Minimum Contact Hours with Principal Trainer(s): 10 hours

Topics in this category include:

  • Observing others teaching: 5 hours (2 hours of these must be under the Principal Trainer(s)’ supervision)
  • Receiving and giving feedback
  • Assisting students while someone else is teaching
  • Practice teaching: 15 hours (8 hours of these must be under the Principal Trainer(s) and 10 of these 15 hours must as the lead teacher)

Evaluation or observation of yoga classes outside of the Yoga Teacher Training Program constitutes Non-Contact Hours.

Elective Hours: 8 Hours

Elective hours (8 hours) are to be distributed among Educational Categories according to the school’s chosen emphasis (may be Contact or Non-Contact Hours).

TOTAL HOURS: 95 hours

Total minimum Contact Hours: 87 hours
Total minimum Contact Hours with Principal Trainer(s): 38 hours
